The Problem of Obesity in Dogs

Obesity is not just a problem that most human face but it is also an enormous problem for dogs. Studies indicate that more than 20-40% dogs in developed countries are obese. Do you know that obesity or overweight problem can shorten your dog's life? Yes! It's true.

Although, dogs do not lose weight easily but with your help and support they can overcome this problem. Obesity in dogs can cause several health problems like diabetes mellitus, heart disease, increased blood pressure, decreased stamina, decreased liver function, reproductive problems, digestive disorders and more.

Overfeeding is one of the main reasons behind the cause of obesity in dogs. Most pet owners tend to feed their dogs too much or wrong kind of food, which result in obesity. High calorie treats, extra food and lack of exercise are some of the factors that leads to obesity in dogs. In short, overweight issues in dogs are same as people.

You can do many things to help your dog lose weight. First of all, evaluate the diet of your dog. For example, if you're feeding a high protein food to your dog then does he get enough exercise to remove the extra fat content.

If you're feeding proper food then check whether you're feeding proper amounts. One of the main problems that most pet owners make is to feed their dogs as per the amount recommended on the bag's label. Most dog food company mention an amount much higher that result in obese dogs. Instead, feed your dog as much as he will eat in 5-10 minutes and then put his bowl up. You can also divide his meal team into two or three small feedings per day.

Whenever you give snacks to your dog make sure it is healthy and low calorie. Generally, snacks like carrots or popcorn are better. However, try and avoid giving fattening peanut butter snacks and high calorie dog cookies.

If you want your pet dog to stay healthy and live longer then make sure to manage his food and his eating habits. The healthy choices that you make for your dog will allow you both to remain happy.
