General Astrology and Western Astrology

Astrology is regarded one of the oldest mystical divinations. More and more, it is said to be the one of the most accurate and authentic of all divinations. It proves to be humanity's most persistent psychological tool, that defines one's personality and depicts the shifting cycles of individual lives.

Astrology refers to a pseudo-science, based on the effect of the heavenly bodies on human existence. Evidences are found in early history that both these two are closely linked. It is also part of the Vedic literature and has been preserved and handed down in the guru-parampara, the chain of apostolic succession since time immemorial. Vedic astrology is said to be the original form of astrology, which existed thousands of years ago in the Indian subcontinent.

According to some followers, the positions of the sun, moon and planets against the starry background have great influences on peoples' personalities, thereby shaping their lives. When it comes to astrology, there is always a controversy exists, since there a number of different followers and believers. According some others, astrology is an art that is based on the foretelling of a person's future or gaining information on a person's personality through examination of stars, the sun, the moon, planets, comets and other bodies associated with astronomy.

Western astrology is focused on modifications of a person's personality. And it is based on modern psychology. Western astrology is believed to be originated in Mesopotamia, and all of the cultures of ancient Iraq and Iran contributed much to its development. The cuneiform tablets from the library of King Ashurbanipal of Assyria (669-626B.C.E.) is one of the earliest records of astrology. Western astrology is based on the twelve signs of the zodiac; Chinese astrology is based on a 60-year cycle and lunar calendar. The latter follows the cycles of the sun related to the seasons, while the Tibeto-Indian astrology system follows the cycles of the sun related to the stars.
