Over the decades, they have evolved into a number of designs and models. Today, we can find a wide variety of bicycles in the market. Bicycles are considered as idea means of transportation, because they are non-polluting, quiet, small, easy to maneuver, light and inexpensive.

Most importantly, bicycles can be used and operated by anyone, from a 5-year-old to a 70-year-old. Bicycling is also a very good form of exercise. But, there are also disadvantages of bicycles. Firstly, they cannot be used for great distances, secondly, they tire out the rider after sometime. These are a few disadvantages that have compelled the inventors to invent engine-powered bicycle or motor bicycle. However, bicycles are still used as chief means of transport in most countries by most people.

The mechanism on which a bicycle works is very simple. The mechanism involves the pushing of the wheels forward by driving the pedals in a circular motion, and the pedals are connected to the wheels by an iron chain. In order to keep the bike in balance, there is a steering rod in the front. Integral parts in a bicycle include the main frame, the drive train, steering rod, the seat/seats, brakes, and optional gears.

Based on their function, bicycles are categorized into several kinds, including mountain bikes, racing bikes, messenger bikes, touring bikes, utility bikes, and Randonneu or Audax bikes. They can also be categorized based on number of riders, such as tandem/twin, triplet bikes and multi bikes; construction, gearing, and sport. Some more types of bicycle include cruiser bikes, freight bikes, cycle rickshaws, clown bikes, velomobiles/bicycle cars, hybrid bikes, art bikes, unicycle and so on.
