17th Century:

The English literature of the 17th century was mainly influenced by the Puritan Revolt together with the English Revolution. It was a time of intense ferment in a wide range of things, such as politics, culture, science, religion and more. The century also had a deep impact in the literature, which registered a high focus on and analysis of the self and the personal life. Philosophers discovered new dimensions in the field of science and mathematics. Some of the popular thinkers during this time were Sir Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes. Moreover, of the several modern makers, none was more important than English physicist Sir Issac Newton, who discovered the law of universal gravitation.

Some of the popular 17th century writers include William Shakespeare (1564-1616), Sir Thomas Browne (1605-1682), Ben Johnson (1572-1637), Lady Mary Wroth (c. 1587-1651), John Donne (1572-1631), and Robert Herrick (1591-1674).the books published during this time is undoubtedly occupies the highest place in English literature, such as the King James version of the Bible, Common Sense by Thomas Paine, and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith.

18th Century:

The century saw the rise of the modern novel as literary genre. Some of the sub-genres developed during the 18th century were the epistolary novel, the sentimental novel, histories, the gothic novel and the libertine novel. Even the Age of Enlightenment started during this time, when the Enlightenment joined hands with absolutism and gradually moved towards Romanticism. The movement stressed strong emotions as trepidation, horror, and the awe experienced in confronting the sublimity in untamed nature.

Some of the most popular authors of this century were Voltaire (1694-1778) and William Wordsworth. Some of the famous books published during the 18th century were On Liberty by John Stuart Mill, Experimental Researches in Electricity by Michael Faraday, The Communist Manifesto, On the Origin of Species by Charles Darwin, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, and The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud.
