Domain name owner refers to that person who currently owns a domain name. This is the basic that as a domain name owner you know it! But, there a few things that you might not know about the domain name that you have registered. Here are some useful information:

  • When you register for a domain name, your provide your contact information which is being publicly listed in the WHOIS database. Your registrar may provide domain name privacy services, where they list their corporate information as the contact to hide your personal address, telephone number and email. They will also protect your personal information from the spam harvesters, but probably not from law enforcement agencies.
  • If you use domain name privacy to register your domain name, and at that time your registrar goes out of business, you may find difficulties proving your rights. However, there are some registrars who protect their customer's privacy by storing customer data with a third party in escrow in certain case if the registrar goes bankrupt.
  • The legal owner of the domain remains the one who controls the domain's username and passwords, email address, and administrative features.
  • A domain name owner has control over the domain name as long as he or she keeps on renewing the registration and paying the fees. But, if the domain name expire, the owner gets a grace period to buy back the domain name. In certain cases, the registrar sells domain name on auction, however, the domain name owner retains first rights to reclaim their domain name. But, he needs to pay an additional penalty to the domain name registrar for waiting so long to renew it. If the domain name is dropped by the registrar and released from the ICANN/Verisign databases, the domain name owner may have to line up with everyone else to fight for that domain name again.
