Raising Kids for Character

As a parent you can better understand that raising kids of character is not that easy. It demands time and attention. Following are a few tips that would help your children build the kind of character best suited for their environment:

  • Parenting first: It seems quite a big task in today's context, when you have so much to do. You feel 24 hours a day is not just enough to do all the stuff. But, you have to take out time for parenting, in fact you should see it as your top priority. Therefore, consciously plan and devote time to parenting.
  • Parenting Time Review: Make a list of the number of things that you have done last week along with the time you spent on getting them done. After that count the amount of time you approximately spent with your kids. Then, reevaluate the list and spot any activities where you could have included your kids. The point is that from now onwards, plan how you can weave your children into your social life and knit yourself into their lives.
  • Be a good example: It is true that children mostly learn things from their elders. As a parent, you can't avoid being an example to your kids, whether good or bad. Therefore, try to set an good example of yours in front of them.
  • Tune in to your kids' antennas: Try to develop an ear and an eye for what your kids are absorbing. Everything that they experience or see have direct influence in the development of their moral values and character.
  • Be consistent on values: For example, never say alcohol is bad and then drink it like a fish. Remember, children cannot develop a moral compass, until and unless people around them use the clear, sharp language of right and wrong.
  • Punish with a loving heart: Kids do not have that much of thinking power as to where they should limit themselves. Therefore, it has to be you to teach them limits and in fact give reasonable punishment when they ignore these limits in certain cases. However, they must be made to understand what the punishment is for, as well as its source is not mere retaliation in anger or irritation.
  • Learn to listen to your kids: Never ignore your kids talk. You can have little patience to listen to them and take them seriously when they talk. In fact, you should set aside time in order to listen and learn to look at things from your kids' perspective.
