Anyone can fall victim of a property theft or personal assault, since criminals are always on the lookout for easy targets like an open window, person walking alone, unlocked car etc. reducing these opportunities really does prevent crime. Here are some of the basic tips on general family safety to protect yourself and your family of becoming a victim:

Protect Yourself:

  • Avoid walking alone especially at night. In case, you need to walk alone be alert and avoid dark and secluded places.
  • Determine the safest route before you walk or drive.
  • Inform your family members or friends about your whereabouts.
  • If you feel you're being followed either contact police immediately or walk towards the nearest well lit or populated area.
  •  If a thief is after your purse or valuable, don't resist.
  • If you're being attacked then try to remember the complexion, height, age of the attacker.

Protect Yourself While Driving:

  • Avoid picking up hitchhikes or offering help to unknown stranded motorist.
  • If your car breaks down then raise the hood to attract the attention of Police or a towing company. Avoid getting help from strangers.
  • Lock your car always when you park.
  • Keep your car keys ready before you approach your vehicle.
  • If a car is following you then note down its detail.
  • Look inside your car before entering it.

Protect Your Home:

  • Install good locks on every door and windows of your homes. Make it a habit to lock all your doors even when you are home.
  • Make sure to set up a door viewer and safety chains on doors.
  • Become friends with your neighbors and request them to look after your home when you're away.

Protect Your Children:

  • Never leave your children unattended in a public place, whether in a stroller or a car.
  • Know all about your babysitters and your child's older friend before leaving them alone with your child alone.
  • Keep a list of emergency numbers from where your children can easily access them.
  • Teach your children to recite their name, age, telephone number and address.

These are just some of the basic steps that can help increase your and your family’s safety. Remember to report crimes and suspicious activities in your neighborhood to police – build a safer community.
