Make a Style Statement with your Feet

If we take a trip down memory lane, we will come to terms with the fact that sandals were more of a necessity than a luxury. What constitutes a part of peoples' style statement today was a sheer means to protect one's feet back in the Stone Age (in all probability the concept of style was unknown to man back then). There is evidence to substantiate the fact that the first sandals appeared as far back as the Ice Age. Then came the Stone Age man and he looked for an article to protect his feet and came up with the rudimentary leather sandals he crafted out of animal skin. These sandals were characterized by very basic designs that were made out of the same type of hide that these ancient men made their clothes out of. This style of a rough animal hide covering continued until about 10,000 years ago, after which the concept of straps or thongs began to take shape.

Such straps or thongs were to be attached with heavy sturdy soles that were meant to protect the bottom of one's feet. The world started to exhibit strong signs of modernity as civilizations started to take shape. A more systematic life brought along a more refined understanding of the environment among people. They now began to learn more and soon discovered that with the diverse plant and animal life around them, they had access to a pool of options and more creativity in terms of incorporating new styles into sandals. This can be constituted as the turning point in the history of sandal making. Ancient Egyptians used papyrus and palm leaves to create their version of this ancient footwear. The Greeks and Romans used sandals in their everyday clothing as well as a part of their military uniforms. In India, where the cow has been treated as a sacred animal, sandals are made of materials such as wood, ivory and metal.

Throughout the pages of human civilization, sandals have been a major part in the entire clan of footwear that has been crafted, but it was not until the 20th century that they become a fashion statement, a force to reckon with. Most major designers since the 1920s have turned out some impeccably creative, original and fresh variety on the sandal theme. Sandals for men have remained fashionable since ancient times and continue to be embraced by the average beach bum today. Active and hiking sandals have been introduced over the last 20 years. Women's sandals come in every shape and size imaginable including flats, high heeled sandals, peek-toed sandals and wedges, to mention a few. Though sandals have received a revolutionizing makeover in terms of design and usage since they were first made, they continue to be an essential part of every person's wardrobe today and don't seem to be going out of style anytime soon.
