How To Plan Camping Food

Owner

Earlier campers and hikers had a very limited choice of food items to pack along with them. The breads and powdered eggs were the only major options. But today there is a wide variety of healthy food items, starting from all the flavors of dehydrated food to freeze-dried camping food items.

The benefits of camping food items:

  • The food is not only highly nourishing but economical as well. You can choose it according to your own individual tastes.
  • On your camping trips, you obviously can't carry a refrigerator along with you. The best part of the camping foods is that they don't need to be refrigerated and will not get spoiled even if kept outdoors for long.
  • Another positive point of freeze-dried or dehydrated foods is that they are lighter in weight. The weight gets reduced by sixty to ninety percent. It will surely be a boon for you, as you would certainly not like to carry heavily loaded bags along with you for a few days of a camping and hiking trip.

Good food will add more fun to your camping or hiking trip. Camping food should be one that will not only be easier to carry but also easier and faster to cook.

Here are some of the good meals that you can opt for on your camping trip:

  • Hamburgers or hot dogs are usually favorites of all. It's very convenient to make and serve them. So, it will be best for you to include them on you menu.
  • MREs (Meals Ready To Eat) are designed especially for traveling. They can be prepared in very less time and packing them is also not a hurdle. These foods are not only yummy but affordable as well. You can get up to thirty meals for less than hundred dollars.
  • Foods in a can can be heated easily in a pot. It consumes less time but provides more taste. Moreover, the empty cans can prove to be of some use on your campsite, for instance to store certain small items.
  • There are several readymade breakfast foods available like cereal, granola, fruit, etc. which you can easily carry along with you. If you take these foods along with you, then you don't need to build up a morning fire for the first few days of your trip.
  • Boxed foods like rice and noodle dishes, Mac and cheese etc. will also serve as nice camping foods. They can be cooked very quickly; they are relatively lightweight and can also be disposed off very easily afterwards.
  • You should also add crackers to your camping food list. They add taste to a lot of other food items like tuna, cheese, some kinds of meats etc.
  • Some of the fast menu options that are toothsome for everybody include Taco Salad (chips, shredded lettuce, and pinto) and Pita Bread Pizza (Pizza sauce, cheddar or mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, pita bread).
  • It will be better for you to take the camping drinks, in a powdered form, rather than in liquid state. Water can be added later while you need to take a drink. Carrying powdered drinks will be much more easier.

You should be more cautious about your winter camping foods. In winters, you need to eat more frequently. You should focus on the timing and type of your meals during winters.

So, while packing up your bags for camping or hiking trips, make sure you include healthy camping foods in your packing.
