Learn the Art of Crochet

Owner

This lovely and amazing art of crocheting is gaining popularity with the passage of time. More people are becoming interested in making crochet designs with high quality threads and accessories. It is a pleasure for a newcomer or even an experienced crotchetier to make items with different yarn textures, designs, patterns and colors.

But the Art really needs a lot of practice. Here are some useful guidelines that will help beginners to make crocheting easier. You must keep in mind that there are two kinds of patterns for a crochet design:

  • There are certain patterns that are in the form of a diagram, having a short explanation about a variety of symbols that illustrate about the stitches that are to be used.
  • Another kind of pattern is called “Written Crochet Patter,” which explains about which stitches should come at what order.

How to read a pattern?

It becomes really necessary to understand all kinds of abbreviations that are used in the patterns. If you are able to memorize these abbreviations, then it becomes very easy for you to gain efficiency in the art.

Important tips:

  • If you are taking the help of a pattern, then keep this thing in mind that these Crochet instructions are worked in rows or rounds. The instructions will be indicated on the pattern itself.
  • A “Foundation Chain” is followed to commence these designs. If it is a straight piece of Crochet design, then the chain will be long and for a circled design, the chain should be short. The small chain is always ended with a “slip stitch,” so never make it into the first stitch.
  • These designs basically are ranked according to the difficulty levels. These levels are differentiated into three categories: Advanced, Intermediate, Easy or Beginner. You must choose a pattern that suits your abilities and comfort level. You can later increase your level of difficulty as your skill advances with time.
  • Hold the yarn and the hook in such a way that the yarn should flow without any restraints. You should maintain a balance in the amount of pressure you are using while crocheting.
  • Count the number of stitches and chains to avoid any confusion and to ensure that you are achieving the correct height and length for a particular row.
  • Just before commencing the design, you should make a sample of the desired pattern. This will give you a rough indication about the size. If the sample size is larger than expected, then you can use a smaller hook and vice versa for the opposite case.
  • The next step is to pick up two loops from the earlier row every time except when the pattern demands to pick up either the back or the front loop.
  • The interval between the stitches is called the “space.”
  • After completing the work, just pull through a “loop on hook” and cut the yarn.
