The Origin of HTML

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) has grown in many ways since its origin. HTML coding has undergone a lot of changes to keep pace with the ever changing World Wide Web. Therefore, you'll find several versions of HTML.

The Origin

In the year 1980, Tim Berners-Lee HTML a physicist at CERN proposed ENQUIRE, a system that allowed researchers to use and share documents. In 1989, both Berners and Robert Cailliau (data system engineer) submitted separate proposals for an internet based hypertext system offering almost same functionality. In the following year, both collaborated for the project World Wide Web (W3), which was accepted by CERN. Therefore, HTML was developed to allow sharing of documents, news, mail, hypermedia, etc. on the internet.

The World Wide Web is considered to be the very first version of HTML. Although, it didn't allow display of graphics as it didn't support the image tag but it was believed to be the backbone of the world wide web.

As, no standardization rules were followed by the In the beginning there was no standardization either which meant that different browsers displayed web pages differently from each other. Even today you can see differences in web pages depending on which browser you use, but the slight differences you see today are minute compared to the first version of HTML.

The lack of standardization rules in the World Wide Web resulted in many problems and as a result coding for HTML had to be changed accordingly. Therefore, HTML version 2, was released in an attempt to formalize the web browsers. Over the years, many HTML versions have been released. HTML version 4.01, is the current standard, widely used today.
