It features steady elevation over one and a half miles. A few other trails include Barker Way trailhead, the Big Rock Park trailhead and Mesa Road trailhead.. Barker Way trail, as opposed to the Main Golfcrest Trail, is rarely used by people. The trail has more than 25 hairpin turns or switchbacks. Big Rock Park trail is the least used among all the trails. It provides the biggest challenge to trail hikers and mountain climbers. Mesa Road trail is the one of the best features of the Missions Trails Regional Park. While hiking through Mesa Road trail, you will find heavy vegetation.

In the year 1931, students from SDSU painted a white S on the side of Cowles Mountain, which is why, it is also known as S Mountain. The SDSU students used to repaint it util 1980, since the paint used to fade off. Ever since Missions Trails Regional Park has become a protected area, the S has completely faded away and eventually disappeared. Now, no one has permission to paint on the Mountain.
