The performance record of the team and the players are usually found in the ice hockey stats. The report indicate the standing of the team, one is interested in. However, most people find difficulty in understanding the statistics because it mainly comprises of only numbers and abbreviations. This article has been written so that you can understand the topic better.

The statistics for players commonly include abbreviations like G for goal and A for assists. The summation of goals and assists of a player determines the PTS scoring points. The number of penalties called to the player is indicated by the PIM (Penalties infraction minutes). The total time spent by the player on the rink is indicated TOI. PPG and PPA show the number of goals and assists (respectively) done by the player while his team was on power play. The goals and assists accomplished during the time when the player were shorthand are indicated by the SHG and SHA. +/- is a sign unique to the players stats and stands for goals scored for the team minus the goals scored against the time for the time the player was on the rink and the teams have the same number of players.

If you're looking at a goaltenders stats then G, A and GP holds the same meaning. GS stands for the number of games he started. GA stands for goals against, which is the sum of goals against the goaltender and its average is denoted as GAA. The number of goals dealt is indicated by the SOG (shots on the goal). The total number of goals deflected by the goaltender is denoted by SV (saves).

I agree that understanding ice hockey statistics is not easy but after going through this article you'll have a better understanding.
