America is known to be one of the most innovative nations of the world especially when it comes to sports. One of the finest inventions by the country is the softball. The sport has a close resemblance to baseball, but with slight and significant alterations.

Some of the basic difference between softball and baseball is that the former is a team sport whereas, the latter, the ball is thrown by a player to another player on the opposing team. The name Softball has been derived after the ball with which it is played – the softball. Pitcher is the player who is throwing the ball and batter is the player who holds the bat and to whom the ball is thrown. The scoring of the game depends on the batter who hits the softball and runs around the bases.

Following are the other differences between baseball and softball:

  • The basic difference between the two is the ball. Baseball is played with a hardball while a relatively softer ball is used in softball.
  • In softball, the ball is thrown or pitched to the batter in an underarm fashion. Whereas, it's just the opposite in baseball where the ball is pitched over arm or sidearm.
  • Playing field is much smaller in softball as compared to baseball.
  • In baseball there are nine innings, but n softball a game is only seven innings long. Hence, the game of softball is much shorter than baseball.

Both, baseball and softball are equally famous in and around the region of United States of America.
