Never use splash pages
When you land on a website, the first thing that you notice is splash pages!
They are normally geared up with very beautiful image with words like "welcome" or "click here to enter". Please....don't use the for your website! They are just like those pretty vases with no real purpose. A splash page is a waste of time and it gives the visitors a very good reason to click on the "back" button! Make them feel that they have come on the right site, so NO SPLASH pages...

Not much banner advertisements for your website!
If the visitor is not a net savvy or does not have any kind of knowledge of advertisements, then also he will tend to ignore the banner advertisements. So how can you expect a well guided visitor to click on your banner advertisements? So you will be wasting valuable website real estate. Instead, you can go with a high quality content and try to give relevant affiliate links into your content,. Let the visitors feel that they want to buy rather than being forced upon with the help of banner advertisements.

Make it simple
don't go with extremely cluttered navigation menu, rather the best exercise would be to keep the whole process simple with the help of a straightforward navigation menu so that even a young child will know how to use it. No complicated flash menu please! It looks childish also.

Know your target audience.
When visitors visit and browse your site, you will want to make sure they know which part of the site they are in at that moment. Never confuse your visitors. Provide easy links to the site.

Avoid using audio
if your site is related to information or any other useful knowledge, that the users might want to read for a longer time, then don't deviate their interest from the background of music!
