Changing Web Hosting Providers- Things to Know

Does your web hosting lack in offering services? Or Is your present website outgrown your current account? If the answer to these question is YES! Then, it's high time you change your web hosting provider. For most webmasters it is a scary decision. Here are some of the basic things that will help you make this transition easily.

  1. Backup – Make sure to have a backup of all your files and database before you decide to transfer to a new web hosting provider. Use FTP to copy all your files into your current hosting account. For Transferring your database, you can use different backup methods as per your database vendor. Usually, most providers offer a backup utility.
  2. Transfer – Before you change the DNS information of your domain name make sure your website is functioning properly. Although, it may not be possible to navigate full but you can still point to some individual pages to be sure they will come up. To perform this step you need to use the IP address of your hosting account along with your username.
  3. Upload Backup File – Finally, you need to upload your backup file in the new server. This step will allow you to restore your database as it was on the old server. Make sure to change the server name for your domain name. You can find this information with the registrar or with your old web hosting provider. Most web host providers will assign you a username and password to log into an account to change the nameservers. Make sure your your old web hosting company deletes your old account.
