Here are some of the key principles and practices of expository writing. Once you've understood them properly, they will help you cover most writing situations, both creative and expository.

The Principle of Clarity

The clarity principle implies to be clear. It is not just a matter of personal appreciation. The following three points will help you to write with clarity.

  1. Special Emphasizes on Key Points – This step will allow you to determine key points. For instance, the ideas your readers should imbibe from your text.
  2. De-emphasize Points that are of Secondary Importance – It is a bit difficult step. You need to prioritize your points so that you don't put everything you have. You'll be able to perform this step only if you know what your readers really want. All the points that are of secondary importance should be de-emphasized, to allow readers recognize key ideas and not get lost in the details.
  3. Points that are Unimportant should be Eliminated – The points that are irrelevant should be removed because any point that don't add any key ideas will tend to make the text obscure.

The Principle of Conciseness

This principle cover two main points such as:

  1. Long as necessary – This point refers to the explanation of key points identified in the clarity principle. Note that it is not about the number of words.
  2. Short as possible – It means all the words used in a text should not to be more than the minimum limit or it will damage the clarity. If you write a content that is too long then readers will find difficulty in understanding those extra words, and will be continually failing because they serve no purpose. Anything that doesn't add to the text, subtracts from it.

The Principle of Density

According to the density principle, you text should contain:

  1. Exact information – It will add to the clarity of the text written. There is no room for interpretation every word must support the content. Only precise information help generate confidence as it assure readers that you really know what you're talking about. This helps in attracting their attraction and making it easier for them to access points.
  2. Link Logically – The text written should have a logical flow. Frequent break in the content will confuse the reader and eventually they will lose their interest in the content.

These are the three basic fundamental principles of expository writing, which can be applied to both Non-Fiction and Fiction writing.
